WHOIS is a protocol which makes it easy to see the details a specific domain name has been registered with either through a command line or using special web-based lookup websites. This info includes the names, address and e-mail address of the owner, admin, tech and billing persons along with the registrar business the domain address has been purchased through, the creation and expiration dates. Apart from a few country-code TLDs that have certain limitations, the WHOIS details of any domain can be changed freely at any time, which is quite necessary considering that in accordance with the policies of the top-level Internet Corporation, ICANN, all details must be current and legitimate at all times. Inability to conform with these policies could lead to losing the ownership of an Internet domain and in many cases a domain may even be removed from the Domain Name System and released for free registration.
